Conclusions

In our work, we found that traffic flows are indeed a very suitable model to use for traffic measurement and traffic analysis. From our comparison of different tools and strategies for network monitoring, the IETF model with its prototype applications (NeTraMet, NeMaC and nifty) seems to be the most advanced one. It can already be used on many kind of network technologies, most interesting certainly the version for ATM OC3 which provides us with a standardized interface to the OC3MON hardware.

It can only be hoped that manufacturers of networking equipment will soon begin to implement the NeTraMet functionality into their equipment. This would surely highly motivate the software industry to integrate the additional functionality into their network management products.

The work on the Java based traffic flow analyser is not yet finished by far. The contribution has reached a state that can be used to show how useful Java can be for this kind of application, and that it is possible to write flow-based analysis applications in Java. The speed of the Java VM on standard desktop PCs has shown to be high enough.

For further projects, we think that it would be most interesting to implement the other example applications for the IETF architecture in Java as well. Not less interesting would be to integrate the whole set of Java methods into an existing SNMP package for Java. This could for example be done with the AdventNet products and would provide new dimensions for network monitoring.
